How I Balanced Bitcoin Mining With VoIP: Prioritizing Packets in the Forest

Introduction
Running Bitcoin miners at home or in a small office is fun and exciting — until you realize they can eat up so much bandwidth that your phone system starts to suffer. That’s exactly what happened to me. My miners were humming along, but my VoIP phone system (internet-based calls) was experiencing packet loss. The result? Choppy calls, dropped audio, and frustration.
Luckily, there’s a way to fix this: traffic shaping and prioritization.
The Problem: Hungry Miners
Mining rigs like the Antminer S21+ and Avalon Qs don’t actually consume a ton of internet bandwidth compared to video streaming, but they are constant and relentless.
- Each miner continuously communicates with the pool.
- Packets are small but frequent.
- Without controls, miners can crowd out more sensitive services.
Meanwhile, VoIP calls require very little bandwidth but are extremely sensitive to packet loss and latency.
The Solution: Prioritizing VoIP Traffic
Think of it like this:
- Your miners are squirrels gathering acorns nonstop.
- Your VoIP system is a delicate owl hooting across the forest.
- If squirrels stampede too loudly, no one hears the owl.
By setting rules on your router/firewall, you can:
- Give VoIP traffic top priority.
- Limit how much bandwidth miners can consume.
- Keep everything running smoothly — miners still mine, and calls stay clear.
How I Did It (Step by Step)
Created traffic queues for my network.
- One for VoIP traffic (“VIP Acorns”).
- One for miners (“Squirrel Miners”).
Set bandwidth limits on the miner queue.
- Enough to mine efficiently.
- Not so much that it hogged the forest.
Prioritized VoIP packets.
- SIP and RTP traffic (the protocols used by VoIP) were given top priority.
Tested it in action.
- Calls became crystal clear.
- Miners kept working with no noticeable drop in performance.
Lessons Learned
- Miners don’t need unlimited bandwidth — they just need consistent connections.
- VoIP must come first if you want professional, reliable communication.
- With the right router settings, you can mine Bitcoin and still answer the phone.
Conclusion
Mining shouldn’t get in the way of everyday life. With traffic shaping, I balanced the demands of my rigs with the clarity of my phone calls.
As Satoshi Squirrel says:
“Don’t let the miners drown out the hoots — prioritize wisely.” 🐿️📞
